## Research Programmes

Our mathematical research is particularly strong in different forms of analysis, analytic number theory, algebra, topology, geometry and probability theory. One of the more distinctive areas is symplectic geometry, that has a close connection to the quantum and string theory. Other areas in which we conduct research in mathematics are mathematical biology, financial mathematics, mathematical logic and mathematical statistics.

## New investment in mathematical research

Their ability to describe motion of liquids and gases makes them useful in a variety of applications. Yet there’s no one who fully understands the Navier-Stokes equations. Large parts of their nature remain a mystery. But that’s something that Denis Gaidashev, researcher in mathematics, intends to change.

## Mathematician from Uppsala rewarded with Celsius gold medal

Svante Janson is rewarded with The Celsius Gold Medal "for outstanding research in combinatorial probability theory". The medal is The Royal Society of Sciences' finest award.

## Postgraduate Studies in Mathematics

If you want to do research in mathematics, then a postgraduate programme is a first step in the right direction. To enter our programme, you need a master's degree in mathematics, or a master's degree in engineering physics. ## Centre for Interdisciplinary Mathematics (CIM)

The Centre for Interdisciplinary Mathematics in Uppsala facilitates novel and exciting joint research between the mathematical sciences and other disciplines and industry. The aim is to engage mathematics directly in science by using mathematics to understand real world systems.
